Nikola Ludlová, The Jindřich Chalupecký Society, December 2023
In December 2023 we realized the second edition of the Propaganda School, as part of the public program to Jonas Staal’s exhibition Propaganda Station, currently on display in the regional gallery PLATO Ostrava, along with the exhibition of the laureates of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award.
The lecture series focuses on the salient issues that are also featured in the exhibition and that the author has been researching for the previous 10 years like alt-right propaganda, financial propaganda, and climate propaganda. The invitation to the lecture series entitled Know Your Enemy: Hate Speech and Anti-Roma Propaganda and Counter-Propaganda Strategies accepted the American human rights activists based in the Czech Republic since 1989, Gwendolyn Albert, and the political scientists, Roma activists and public intellectual, Edita Stejskalová. Gwendolyn presented, in a comparative perspective, characteristic elements of anti-Roma propaganda in chosen European nations with a focus on visual and social media. She outlined a strategy for developing counter-propaganda and disseminating it to target groups using various case studies. Edita analysed the conceptual and ideological frameworks and tools of the anti-Roma propaganda in the Czech Republic on both, nation-wide and municipal levels, characterizing the major proponents and their agendas, as well as targeted audiences.
